As authors and writers, we’re always learning about resources and industry tools that we can use to improve our book project performance and the enjoyment of our writing and marketing experiences.  Today let’s talk about what you do know and what to do when you don’t know about a particular facet of the book process.

As an author, we often know a lot about our subject matter – whether we’ve lived through it, researched it, or have a particular interest or experience with it. We know it and we get to know it well.  That’s why we are the ones who write about it.

What about the other areas of the book writing, marketing and publishing process that you don’t know?  What is an author to do?

Just like when we were kids, we had to start at the beginning and find out.  We had to identify what we wanted to know and then seek it.  We’d ask everyone we know how we could get better at what it was that we wanted to master.

Whether it was sports, an instrument, art or chorus, we would work at it and work at it over and over.  And each time we’d get better. Each time we asked for help, someone would point our feet in the right direction for the next steps.

As an author, it is better to build a team of professionals to support you with your project than it is to go it alone.  The industry professionals can point your feet in the right direction so you avoid some common mistakes – and perhaps some costly mistakes.

Just like we’ve been talking about the pitfalls and mistakes authors and writers make with media liability and insurance, there are pitfalls and mistakes to be avoided in other areas of the book process that can also cost you many more dollars, energy, effort and time than you need to spend.

So remember what you did in grade school and raise your hand and ask for help!

Take your great book idea, concept, proposal, manuscript or published work and take it to one of us so we can help put your feet on the right next steps for your project.

All you have to do is want to move forward with your book project and seek us out.

We’re all here to help you.
