by Jennifer S. Wilkov,
Did you know that 81% of the U.S. population wants to write a book? And that most people don’t know what steps to take, whether they want to write and publish a fiction, non-fiction or children’s book?
It’s easy to believe. Oftentimes, in many situations, we know enough about the idea that we have but we don’t have the information or guidance to turn it into what we envision, in this case – a book. Or sometimes when we make it far enough and are fortunate to get published, the project then must be marketed properly in the marketplace to make it a bigger part of your overall marketing platform.
The benefits of being an author are immeasurable. It is often a life goal for many – to become a published author. The most tangible of these benefits is that the book becomes a credibility brochure for the author and can lead to a path filled with passive income, public speaking engagements and even a community of dedicated fans and readers. It’s fun to be an author and to serve others in this meaningful way.
Using your book as your “hook” is even more valuable when you can use your book as a hook for your business, project, non-profit organization or personal interest about which you are passionate. Expressing yourself through your book project allows those who read it to develop a relationship with you as the author.
If it’s fiction, they develop that relationship with your characters, come to trust you as an author and follow the flow of your imagination. If it’s a non-fiction, the readers develop this trust for you and the guidance and direction you can provide in a particular subject area. If it’s a children’s book, the parent trusts you with their most precious, valuable and prized relationship – the one with their children. They look to you to contribute to the deep bond they have with their children and their ability to connect with them.
I always say, “Use your book is your hook!” Tell others what you are passionate about. Express this and tell your story in a book. What you experience and the deep knowledge and interest you have in it will become a great relationship builder over time.
Think about it: when you network with a group of people, it’s always easy to remember the author in the group, as they are usually few and far between.
I meet so many people who have given up on their book ideas or think they are not good enough. The truth is you can do it and become a published author who is successful.
All you need to do is find your hook – then write and market your book!
